Late Night Food in the North-East: 7 Supper Spots Near Hougang, Kovan and Serangoon

Late night food in Singapore’s North-East is concentrated in a few pockets. Upper Serangoon Road near Kovan is the old supper strip, Hougang Village has round-the-clock prata, and Serangoon Gardens fills up in the evening around Chomp Chomp. The newer towns of Sengkang and Punggol go quiet much earlier. This guide names seven places to eat after 10pm and explains what to do when everything else is shut.

All seven are within a bus ride or two MRT stops of Hougang Central, the site of LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences). We checked each in September 2026 against the business’s own pages, reviews posted this year and, for halal status, the MUIS directory.

Hougang Village: prata around the clock

1. Srisun Express (Hougang Avenue 8)

681 Hougang Avenue 8, #01-831. The Hougang branch of this prata chain says on its website that it is open 24/7, and it was listed in the MUIS halal directory when we checked. It moved into a former 24-hour clinic unit, so the room is bright and clean rather than a typical open-fronted coffee shop. Prata, murtabak, thosai, mee goreng and teh tarik cover most cravings.

2. Al Falah Restaurant

681 Hougang Avenue 8, #01-855. A few units along the same block, Al Falah is Hougang’s long-running crispy prata shop, and recent reviews still describe it as open around the clock. It is also known for tissue prata, murtabak and biryani. We did not find this outlet in the MUIS directory in September 2026. Having two late prata shops on one block means you rarely leave hungry.

Upper Serangoon Road and Kovan

The shophouses and coffee shops along Upper Serangoon Road have fed night-shift workers and supper crowds for decades. Walk the stretch near Kovan MRT and you will find several stalls still cooking well after the malls close. 3. Heng Long Teochew Porridge

1012 Upper Serangoon Road. A Teochew porridge shop in the classic style: plain, watery rice porridge with a long counter of side dishes such as braised duck, steamed fish, salted vegetables and omelette. You point, and it is plated for the table. A 2026 listing gives its hours as late morning until about 2am, which makes it one of the few places where a family can sit down for a proper meal after midnight.

4. Ponggol Nasi Lemak Centre

965 Upper Serangoon Road. A nasi lemak name dating from 1979, and not in Punggol despite the spelling. It serves Chinese-style nasi lemak with sides picked from the counter, such as chicken wings, fish and otah. It opens from the late afternoon; sources in 2026 give closing times from around midnight to the early hours, and Thursday as its rest day, so check before a very late trip.

5. 21 Seafood

212 Hougang Street 21, #01-347. A Kovan zi char stall known for Sri Lankan crab in many styles, with listings showing it open until about 1am. It suits a group that wants a proper cooked dinner late. It is a short walk from Kovan MRT, one stop from Hougang. More in our zi char guide.

Serangoon Gardens

6. Chomp Chomp Food Centre

20 Kensington Park Road. Serangoon Gardens’ open-air evening hawker centre reopened on 27 January 2026 after a three-month NEA renovation. It is known for satay, barbecued chicken wings, sambal stingray, fried Hokkien mee and carrot cake. Most stalls wind down around midnight, so treat it as a late dinner rather than a 2am stop. 7. Srisun Express (Serangoon Gardens)

56 Serangoon Garden Way. The Serangoon Gardens branch of Srisun, a short walk from Chomp Chomp, is where the crowd often moves on when the hawker centre closes. It was listed in the MUIS halal directory in September 2026 and, like the Hougang branch, trades through the night.

From Hougang, ride two stops to Serangoon (NE12), then take a bus or taxi into the estate.

Sengkang and Punggol after dark

The younger towns have no established supper strip, and their hawker centres close in the evening. The occasional pasar malam beside the MRT stations brings evening food stalls for a few weeks at a time. One exception for dessert is a late-night ice cream bar in Fernvale, covered in our Sengkang cafés guide. After that, your options are coffee shops under HDB blocks, where the zi char and drinks stalls stay open latest, and fast food near Compass One and Waterway Point. Supper etiquette

• Rest days: independent shops usually close one day a week, and rarely the same day as their neighbours.
• Festive periods: expect shorter hours or closures around Chinese New Year.
• Keep it down: many supper spots sit under HDB blocks, so keep the noise low when you leave.

Supper from Hougang Central

For anyone living at LinkTown Residences, planned directly above Hougang MRT (NE14) and a new bus interchange, Hougang Village and Upper Serangoon Road are one bus ride away, and Kovan is a single stop on the North East Line. The integrated development will add a mall of about 300,000 sq ft; tenants and trading hours have not been announced.
