A festive shopping plan around Hougang Central

You can get most of what you need within a few stops of Hougang MRT (NE14). A simple way to spread the load:

1. Mid-January: buy the things that keep, such as cookies, drinks by the carton and red packets. Hougang Mall is next to the station, and NEX at Serangoon is two stops away on the North East Line.

3. The eve: leave only fresh food and steamboat ingredients for the day itself, and check your supermarket’s festive hours first. Some supermarkets in the region open round the clock in normal weeks, but festive hours can differ.

Temple visits and community events

Many families visit a temple on the eve or the first morning. In Hougang, the best-known Taoist temple is Tou Mu Kung on Upper Serangoon Road, famous for the Nine Emperor Gods festival later in the lunar year. It is a short bus ride or walk south along Upper Serangoon Road from Hougang Central. Neighbourhood temples across the region also open for New Year prayers. Parking is tight at most of them over the holiday, so take a bus if you can, dress modestly and follow each temple’s guidance on joss sticks. Getting around over the holiday

Trains and buses run through Chinese New Year, though operators sometimes extend or adjust hours on the eve. Check SBS Transit’s notices for the North East Line and the Sengkang and Punggol LRT before a late journey. From Hougang MRT, Sengkang is two stops north, Punggol three and Serangoon two stops south, so visiting relatives across the North-East is easy without a car. Roads around temples and markets are busiest on the eve.
