Sengkang Riverside Park: Constructed Wetland, Floating Boardwalk and the Trip from Hougang Central

Sengkang Riverside Park is Sengkang’s big green space: 21.3 hectares on both sides of the Punggol River, built around what NParks calls one of Singapore’s largest man-made wetlands. It is open 24 hours, sits on two park connector routes, and mixes quiet nature with practical things like playgrounds, a dog run and a tuckshop. Getting there from Hougang Central

From Hougang MRT (NE14), ride the North East Line two stops to Sengkang (NE16), about 5 minutes on the train (approximate). At Sengkang, change to the Sengkang LRT West Loop:

• Kupang for the Visitor and Mangrove plots, where the wetland and most of the nature features are.
• Farmway for the Civic plot and the Anchorvale side.

Allow roughly 25 to 35 minutes door to door from Hougang Central, depending on LRT waits (approximate). The LRT loops sometimes run adjusted services during upgrading works, so check the operator’s notices before you go.

By bike, the park is on the Punggol Park Connector, which NParks describes as running from Gerald Drive along Punggol Reservoir past Anchorvale Community Club and the sports complex, through the wetland and on towards the coast. The constructed wetland

The park’s signature feature is its constructed wetland, a system of planted ponds and water beds along the river. NParks describes it as one of the largest man-made wetlands in Singapore and home to mangrove birds, damselflies and a fruit-themed boardwalk. Planted wetlands of this kind also help filter rainwater naturally before it flows on into the reservoir.

The floating wetland boardwalk

Part of the wetland sits on the water itself: planted beds and a boardwalk that float on the reservoir beside Anchorvale, often called the Sengkang Floating Wetland. Look out for the oversized fruit sculptures that give it its theme. For residents it doubles as a shortcut between the park and the Anchorvale Community Club and sports centre side, so a swim or a class can easily become an evening walk. What lives here

NParks names the Purple Heron, Little Tern and Collared Kingfisher among the mangrove birds, and the Common Bluetail and Common Scarlet among the dragonflies and damselflies over the ponds. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to see them.

• Fruit trees: over 20 species, including mango, starfruit, longan, tamarind and white dragon fruit. They are for looking at, not picking.
• Sengkang Riverside Bridge: a 290 m bridge linking the park’s banks and Punggol Reservoir, with raised views over the water. It is the obvious spot for photos.

How it compares with Punggol Park

Punggol Park in Hougang, about a kilometre from Hougang Central, is the simpler everyday option: a lake loop, playgrounds and bike rental. Sengkang Riverside Park is larger, more varied and better for birds and wetland walks, but it takes a train and an LRT to reach from Hougang.
