Playground Singapore: The Best Free Playgrounds in the North-East, from Hougang

Every HDB estate in Singapore has its own playground, so the question is really which ones are worth a special trip. In the North-East, the answer is a handful of park playgrounds and sandpits run by NParks, a few mall rooftops with water play, and one new heritage-themed playground in Punggol. Below are the ones we checked against NParks, ActiveSG and the malls in September 2026, grouped by type, with the trip from Hougang Central, where LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences) is planned above the MRT station.

Park playgrounds and sandpits (NParks)

Punggol Park playground, Hougang

The closest standout to Hougang Central, about a kilometre north of the MRT. NParks describes a playground in the middle of the park with brightly coloured slides and tunnels, swings and a see-saw. The park itself has a lake loop, bike rental, a dog run and fitness equipment, so a playground visit can fill a morning. Inclusive playground and nature playgarden, Sengkang Riverside Park

NParks lists an inclusive playground designed for children of all abilities, a sandpit with digging tools and a nature playgarden, next to an edible garden. The fruit trees and boardwalks make it a good nature outing for toddlers. It is two NEL stops to Sengkang, then the West Loop LRT. See our Sengkang Riverside Park guide.

Sand play area, Punggol Waterway Park

A kidney-shaped sandpit near Car Park B, which NParks says suits all ages. Bring spades, water and a hat, and go early or late, because shade is limited at midday. The park is along the Punggol Waterway; our Punggol Waterway Park guide covers the rest.

Adventure Playground, Punggol Heritage Trail

NParks opened the first 400 m of the Punggol Heritage Trail in August 2025 and said an Adventure Playground based on the game of pick-up sticks, with swing sets, would follow by the end of 2025. A 70 m Backwoods Trail themed on snakes and ladders leads to it through the woods. It is near the Punggol Digital District; check NParks before a special trip.

Mall playgrounds

• Ninja Trail, Compass One (Sengkang). Seventeen play features for ages 2 to 12 on level 4. The mall lists it as open 10am to 7pm and closed on the first Monday of each month for maintenance. Two stops from Hougang.
• NEX rooftop (Serangoon). A dry and water playground on the rooftop beside Serangoon Library. Two stops south.
• Waterway Point (Punggol). An outdoor wet-and-dry playground at the mall beside Punggol MRT, three stops north.
• The Seletar Mall (Fernvale). A rooftop playground that stays open into the evening, weather permitting.

Mall play areas close for cleaning, maintenance and bad weather, often on a fixed weekday morning. Check the mall’s website on the day.

Water play at the public pools

These are not free, as you pay pool entry, but they are the biggest splash options in the area.

• Hougang Swimming Complex reopened in May 2026 with a refreshed wading pool with water play features for small children. It is a short walk from Hougang MRT and closed on Tuesdays.
• Sengkang Swimming Complex has water slides for children at least 1.2m or 1.3m tall. It is closed on Mondays and on 12 October 2026.

Everyday estate playgrounds

Most HDB precincts in Hougang, Sengkang, Punggol and Serangoon have a playground and fitness corner within a few minutes’ walk, maintained by the town council. They are what most families use on a weekday evening. If one is damaged, report it to the town council (in much of Hougang, Aljunied-Hougang Town Council) or through the OneService app.

Tips for playground days

• Beat the heat. Slides and rubber mats get very hot at midday; before 10am and after 5pm is more comfortable.
• Watch the sky. Outdoor water play closes during lightning. Keep an indoor option in mind; our indoor playgrounds guide lists the ones we could confirm.
• Pack for wet play. Swim nappies for toddlers, a towel and a full change of clothes.
• Bring sand toys for the NParks sandpits; digging tools are provided only at some.

A family view of Hougang Central

From Hougang Central, Punggol Park is the walkable weekend playground, and the Sengkang and Punggol options are two or three NEL stops away. What is the nearest big playground to Hougang MRT?

Punggol Park, which is in Hougang despite its name, has a playground in the middle of the park with slides, tunnels, swings and a see-saw. It is about a kilometre north of Hougang MRT.

Is Punggol Point Park playground open?

No. NParks says Punggol Point Park and its car park are closed from 11 August 2026 to 31 December 2027 for upgrading. Toilets remain open.
