Punggol Bus Interchange and Punggol Transport: Two Interchanges, the LRT Loops and the CRL Extension

Punggol Bus Interchange is the busiest piece of a transport network that has grown quickly with the town. Punggol now has two bus interchanges, two North East Line stations, two LRT loops and a Cross Island Line extension under construction. This guide sets out how they fit together, with the trip from Hougang Central for anyone living, or planning to live, at LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences) three stops down the line.

Punggol Bus Interchange

The town-centre interchange sits next to Punggol MRT/LRT station and Waterway Point, so most people change between bus, train and mall without a long walk. Feeder services loop through the estates, and trunk services head out to other towns. Service numbers change as the town grows, so plan with a journey planner or LTA’s MyTransport.SG app rather than an old map. Two things are worth knowing. First, bus service 84 was split into 84G and 84W in June 2024, so older directions to Punggol Point may be out of date. Second, some routes that used to start here now start at Punggol Coast, described below.

Punggol Coast Bus Interchange

LTA opened Punggol Coast Bus Interchange on 29 June 2025 and counts it as Singapore’s 15th integrated transport hub. It is built into Punggol Coast MRT station and Punggol Coast Mall, next to the Singapore Institute of Technology campus in the Punggol Digital District. Go-Ahead Singapore runs it.

• Opening services: 34 and 117/117M moved over from Punggol Bus Interchange, with routes extended to serve more of northern Punggol. LTA said 117/117M would serve Punggol Place and nearby areas, and 34 would extend to Punggol Central, keeping a direct link towards Changi Airport and Tampines.
• Facilities: barrier-free access, priority queue zones, wheelchair-accessible toilets, a baby care room and a commuter care room for anyone who needs a quiet space.

For residents in the northern estates, Punggol Coast can save an LRT ride into the town centre. For visitors from Hougang, it is the stop for the Punggol Digital District and Punggol Coast Mall.

The North East Line

Punggol (NE17) and Punggol Coast (NE18) are the last two stations on the NEL, which runs south through Sengkang, Buangkok, Hougang and Serangoon to Dhoby Ghaut and HarbourFront. Punggol Coast opened on 10 December 2024 and extended the line about 1.6 km into the Digital District. Our North East Line guide covers peak-hour crowding and the full station list.

The Punggol LRT loops

The driverless Punggol LRT has two loops, East and West, both starting and ending at Punggol station. Each runs in both directions, so pick whichever way round is shorter for your stop. Coral Edge on the East Loop is the stop for Punggol Plaza and its wet market. The West Loop’s last station, Teck Lee, opened in 2024 and serves the Digital District side.

Riviera on the East Loop will become an interchange once the Cross Island Line arrives. First and last trains vary by station, so check SBS Transit for your stop.

Construction of the Cross Island Line Punggol Extension started in 2023, and LTA expects it to open in 2032. Key points from LTA:

• 7.3 km long, with four stations: Punggol, Riviera, Elias and Pasir Ris.
• Interchanges with the NEL at Punggol, the LRT at Riviera and the East-West Line at Pasir Ris.
• Punggol to Pasir Ris in about 15 minutes, against around 40 minutes by bus today; Punggol North to the Loyang industrial area in about 20 minutes, down from 45 by bus.
• More than 40,000 households expected to benefit.

The extension connects to CRL Phase 1, which LTA targets for 2030 and which makes Hougang an NEL and CRL interchange. See our Cross Island Line map for the whole line. Rail dates can move, so treat 2032 as LTA’s plan.

Getting to Punggol from Hougang Central

• Train: three stops on the NEL from Hougang (NE14) to Punggol (NE17), or four to Punggol Coast (NE18). Allow roughly 7 to 10 minutes in the train (approximate; waiting and walking add more).
• Bike: park connectors link Punggol Park in Hougang with the Sengkang and Punggol waterways, a pleasant weekend ride.
• Why go: Waterway Point, the Punggol Waterway and coast, the Digital District, and in future the CRL towards Pasir Ris.

LinkTown Residences is planned with a direct link to Hougang MRT, and the Hougang Central development will include a new bus interchange of its own. That puts Punggol, its two interchanges and the Digital District three to four stops away on one line.
