Punggol Digital District: What It Is, the SIT Campus, Jobs and Why It Matters for Hougang

Punggol Digital District (PDD) is one of the largest new job centres in the north-east, and it is only four MRT stops from Hougang. That makes it worth understanding for anyone thinking about living around Hougang Central, including buyers weighing LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences). This guide explains what PDD is, what is already open, how many jobs it is planned for, and what it realistically means for Hougang residents.

What is Punggol Digital District?

PDD is a business district developed by JTC on Punggol’s northern shore. Its core features, as JTC describes them:

• Size: about 50 hectares.
• Focus: growth areas of the digital economy, including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, robotics and fintech.
• Jobs: projected to support about 28,000 jobs.
• University on site: it is planned together with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), so companies and students share one campus-style district.
• Early anchors: JTC names the OCBC Innovation Hub and UOB’s global technology and innovation centre among its occupiers.
• Smart infrastructure: an Open Digital Platform that shares real-time district data with businesses and students, a smart energy grid and rooftop solar panels. JTC calls it Singapore’s largest mixed-use Green Mark Platinum district.

The idea is to bring jobs closer to where people in the north-east live, rather than sending everyone into the city each morning.

The SIT Punggol campus

SIT started classes at Punggol in September 2024, and by May 2025 it had moved almost all its programmes there from satellite campuses across the island. The campus has ten buildings and can take about 12,000 students, plus several hundred faculty and staff. Its lower levels along Campus Boulevard, the district’s car-free spine of about 800 m, include public areas such as a visitor gallery, a makerspace and food outlets.

Timings for the “coming” items are JTC’s plans, not fixed dates. Companies will also move into the business park in stages, so the 28,000-job figure describes the district when it is full, not today.

A useful quirk: a Hougang resident heading to PDD in the morning rides away from the city, against the main flow of commuters. And because Hougang is inside the stretch from Kovan to Punggol Coast, the NEL’s early-morning free ride scheme (introduced by LTA from 27 December 2025 for trips tapped in before 7.30am or between 9am and 9.45am on weekdays) can apply. What PDD means for Hougang residents

A shorter commute for some jobs

For people working in tech, cybersecurity or finance operations, PDD adds a sizeable employer cluster within a short, direct train ride of Hougang. Not everyone will work there, but it widens the choice of jobs reachable without crossing the island.

Weekend and daily amenities

Punggol Coast Mall, the hawker centre, the Heritage Trail and nearby Coney Island give Hougang families another outing a few stops away, alongside Waterway Point at Punggol.

Rental demand: a possibility, not a promise

Some owners will look at PDD’s workers and students as potential tenants. That depends on how quickly companies move in and on supply in Punggol itself, which is much closer. Where LinkTown Residences fits

LinkTown Residences sits above Hougang MRT in the Hougang Central integrated development, with a mall of about 300,000 sq ft and a new bus interchange. From there, PDD is a direct NEL ride north and the city a direct ride south, and the Cross Island Line interchange at Hougang is targeted for 2030. Completion of Hougang Central Residences is expected around 2030 to 2031.
