North East Line Guide: NEL Stations, Travel from Hougang and Beating the Crowds

The North East Line (NEL) is the purple line on the MRT map and the backbone of travel in Hougang, Sengkang and Punggol. It is also the line that LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences) is planned to connect to directly, at Hougang (NE14). This guide covers how the line is laid out, how long common trips from Hougang take, what the Punggol Coast extension changed, and how to ride it with less squeezing.

NEL facts worth knowing

• Opened: 20 June 2003, run by SBS Transit.
• Driverless from day one: it was the world’s first fully automated, underground heavy-rail line.
• Length and stations: about 22 km and 17 stations, all underground.
• End to end: roughly 35 minutes from HarbourFront to Punggol Coast.
• Fleet: LTA added six trains from July 2023, taking the fleet from 43 to 49.

Middle: the city fringe to Serangoon

NE9 Boon Keng, NE10 Potong Pasir and NE11 Woodleigh are mainly residential stops. NE12 Serangoon is the key one: the Circle Line interchange, with NEX mall and a bus interchange on top.

NE13 Kovan, NE14 Hougang (future Cross Island Line interchange), NE15 Buangkok, NE16 Sengkang (Sengkang LRT), NE17 Punggol (Punggol LRT) and NE18 Punggol Coast.

Because Hougang sits in the middle of the northern half, it has a trip in both directions without transfers: the city and the south coast one way, the newer towns and the Punggol waterfront the other. For station exits and buses at Hougang itself, see our Hougang MRT guide.

Service hours, frequency and disruptions

Trains generally run from about 5.30am until after midnight, with trains every few minutes at peak times and longer gaps late at night. First and last train times differ by station and direction, so check SBS Transit’s timetable for Hougang if you travel at the edges of the day.

During planned works or a breakdown, SBS Transit posts updates on its website and app, and bridging buses may run between affected stations. Hougang Central Bus Interchange is a useful fallback because several trunk routes start there; see our Hougang Central bus interchange guide. Every NEL station has lifts, though not at every exit, so check which exit is barrier-free if you travel with a pram or wheelchair.

The Punggol Coast extension

Punggol Coast (NE18) opened on 10 December 2024, adding about 1.6 km beyond Punggol. The station was first planned for around 2030 and was brought forward to serve Punggol Digital District, the SIT campus and the growing estates in northern Punggol. It sits inside the district, next to Punggol Coast Mall and the Punggol Coast Bus Interchange, which opened in June 2025.

Crowding: what to expect and how to cope

The NEL is busy on weekday mornings, when city-bound trains pick up commuters at Punggol Coast, Punggol, Sengkang and Buangkok before reaching Hougang, which is why LTA has targeted this stretch with incentives. Some practical ways around it:

• Use the free off-peak window. Since 27 December 2025, the first rail trip is free for commuters who tap in at stations from Kovan to Punggol Coast, including Hougang, on weekdays before 7.30am or between 9am and 9.45am. LTA reported in March 2026 that about 8% of NEL commuters had moved out of the morning peak. Check that the scheme is still running.
• Stand where the doors are less busy. The carriages nearest station escalators fill first. Walking a little further along the platform often gets you a roomier car.
• Consider the reverse flow. Jobs at Punggol Digital District, Sengkang or Seletar mean riding north in the morning, against the crowd.
• Change lines smartly. For Paya Lebar, Bishan or one-north, change to the Circle Line at Serangoon rather than riding into town.
• Look ahead to the CRL. The Cross Island Line interchange at Hougang, targeted for 2030, should give some trips an alternative to the Serangoon route. See our Cross Island Line map.

What the NEL means for LinkTown Residences

LinkTown Residences is planned above Hougang MRT with a direct link to the station, a new bus interchange and a mall of about 300,000 sq ft. That gives Hougang Central Residences one-train access to the city, the south coast and Punggol, with a second line due when CRL Phase 1 opens. Completion is expected around 2030 to 2031.
