Hougang MRT (NE14): Exits, Buses, Travel Times and the Future CRL Interchange
Which Hougang MRT exit to use, how long the train takes to the city and Punggol, and what changes when the Cross Island Line arrives around 2030.
Hougang MRT station (NE14) is the heart of Hougang town centre. It sits under Hougang Central, next to Hougang Mall and joined to the bus interchange, and it is the station that LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences) is planned to link directly to. This guide covers the practical side: which exit to use, how far the train takes you and roughly how long, and how the station will change when it becomes a Cross Island Line (CRL) interchange.

Which exit should you use?
Hougang station has three exits at street level, and two of them are barrier-free. Pick by where you are going rather than by habit, because the town centre is busy with construction hoardings while the CRL works continue.
- Exit A (bus interchange): comes up inside Hougang Central Bus Interchange. Use it for buses, and for the cluster of public facilities to the north, such as Hougang Polyclinic, Hougang Sports Hall, Hougang Swimming Complex and Hougang Stadium.
- Exit B (Hougang Central): the one for Hougang Mall, the town council’s main office and the walk towards Punggol Park.
- Exit C (Hougang Avenue 10): the side for Punggol Community Club and Montfort Junior and Montfort Secondary schools, and another route to the sports and health facilities.
Tip: station signage is the final word. Walkways around the town centre have been shifted for CRL construction, so follow the signs on the day if a route looks different from last time.
Travel times from Hougang MRT
The North East Line gives Hougang something many heartland towns lack: a single train to the Orchard end of town, the Singapore River, Chinatown and HarbourFront. The table counts stops from NE14 and gives a rough in-train time.

Bus connections at the station
Exit A opens into Hougang Central Bus Interchange, which SBS Transit runs. Routes starting here reach far corners of the island without a train: service 27 loops to Changi Airport, 51 runs to Jurong East, 161 to Woodlands and 102 loops to Seletar Aerospace. Passing routes use the stops along Hougang Central and Hougang Avenue 10. Off-peak free rides on the NEL
To spread out the morning crush, LTA made the first rail trip free for commuters who tap in at any NEL station from Kovan to Punggol Coast, Hougang included, on weekday mornings before 7.30am or between 9am and 9.45am. The scheme began on 27 December 2025, and LTA reported in March 2026 that about 8% of NEL commuters had shifted out of the morning peak. Check LTA or SBS Transit that it is still running before you plan around it.
The future Cross Island Line interchange
Hougang is one of four interchanges on CRL Phase 1, a 29 km line of 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill that LTA targets for 2030. The other three are Pasir Ris (East-West Line), Ang Mo Kio (North-South Line) and Bright Hill (Thomson-East Coast Line). A second island platform is being built for the CRL, and transport enthusiast records describe three extra exits plus new lifts and escalators near Exit A leading to the CRL concourse. Treat those details as indicative until the station opens.
What changes for daily trips:
- East without Serangoon: Defu is 1 stop, Tampines North 2 and Pasir Ris 3 on the CRL.
- West to Ang Mo Kio: 3 stops via Serangoon North and Tavistock, then Teck Ghee and Bright Hill for the Thomson-East Coast Line.
- Towards Punggol by another route: the CRL Punggol Extension, targeted for 2032, will run from Pasir Ris to Punggol via Elias and Riviera.

What it means for LinkTown Residences
LinkTown Residences is planned with a direct link to Hougang MRT, alongside a mall of about 300,000 sq ft and a new integrated bus interchange. When the Hougang Central Residences homes complete, expected around 2030 to 2031, the station should be an NEL and CRL interchange, so residents would have two train lines, buses and daily shopping under one roof.
