Rivervale Mall: Sheng Siong, Food, Services and the Trip from Hougang Central

Rivervale Mall is the kind of place you visit with a list: groceries, a dental check, a tuition drop-off, a quick lunch. It sits at 11 Rivervale Crescent on the eastern side of Sengkang, close to Rumbia LRT station (SE2), and serves the estates around it rather than shoppers from across the island. This guide covers what is inside in 2026, how it compares with the bigger malls nearby, and how you would reach it from LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences) above Hougang MRT.

Getting there from Hougang Central

Rivervale Mall is about 2.7 km north-east of Hougang MRT in a straight line (OneMap). The simplest route is by rail:

What is inside

The mall’s own directory lists 67 outlets. By category that is roughly 23 food and takeaway outlets, 12 beauty and healthcare, 12 services, 11 education and fitness, and a handful of supermarket, convenience and gift shops. In other words, it is weighted towards everyday needs rather than fashion or entertainment.

Sheng Siong supermarket (#03-01)

The supermarket is the reason many residents come. Sheng Siong operates the store on level 3, and its store page lists hours of 7am to 11pm, so it opens well before most of the mall and closes later. Older listings online may still show a different supermarket brand here; go by the Sheng Siong page, which is the current one. Food

Food is the largest single category. Expect a food court, fast-food chains, bakeries and kopi counters, bubble tea kiosks and a few casual restaurants, including Ayam Penyet Ria, which is listed in the directory. It is quick, affordable eating rather than a dining destination. Tenants change, so check the directory if you are going for one outlet.

Health, fitness and services

When to go

• Quietest: weekday mornings and early afternoons.
• Busiest: after school on weekdays, when tuition classes start, and weekend evenings at the supermarket.
• Parking: the multi-storey car park is usually easier than at the larger town-centre malls on a weekend.

Around the mall

Rivervale Mall sits among the HDB estates of Rivervale, one of the earlier parts of Sengkang to be built. Rumbia LRT station is a short walk away, and the East Loop links it to Sengkang town centre in two stops. The Sengkang riverside parks, including Sengkang Riverside Park, are on the other side of town and make a good add-on by bicycle or LRT if you are spending the afternoon in Sengkang.

For a Hougang Central resident, Rivervale Mall is unlikely to be a weekly stop, because Hougang Mall is already a short walk from the MRT and a larger mall is planned within the Hougang Central development itself. It is more useful if you have family in Rivervale, send children to classes there, or want a quieter supermarket run on the way back from Sengkang. What this means for LinkTown Residences

Hougang Central Residences is part of a mixed-use development planned to be directly linked to Hougang MRT, with a new bus interchange and a mall of about 300,000 sq ft that is set to be the largest in Hougang. That puts everyday shopping on the doorstep, while Sengkang’s malls, including Rivervale Mall, stay two NEL stops away for anything more specific. The Cross Island Line interchange at Hougang, with Phase 1 targeted for around 2030, will add east–west links later.
