Sengkang: A Resident’s Guide to the River Town Two Stops from Hougang

Sengkang (盛港) sits between Hougang and Punggol along Sungei Punggol, and for many Hougang families it is simply “up the line”: two MRT stops for the hospital, a riverside park or a different mall. This guide explains how the town is laid out and what it offers, written for anyone comparing the north-east towns, including buyers following LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences) at Hougang MRT (NE14).

Character: a young town on the river

Before the flats, this stretch of river was home to Kangkar, a fishing village and landing point surrounded by small farms. The new town took shape from the late 1990s, and its neighbourhood names lean on a river-and-sea theme. Most blocks are tall and relatively new, the park connectors are wide, and the light rail loops past a large share of front doors. It feels busier and more urban than Punggol, and newer than Hougang.

A useful rule: “Compassvale” and “Rivervale” addresses are on the East Loop, “Anchorvale” and “Fernvale” on the West Loop. Check which loop before you board.

Transport: NEL, LRT and the 2026 loop works

Sengkang (NE16) on the North East Line anchors the town centre, with Compass One above it and Sengkang Bus Interchange alongside. The Sengkang LRT runs its East and West loops from the same station. Buangkok (NE15), one stop south, has its own bus interchange, which opened on 1 December 2024 at Sengkang Grand Mall; the old Compassvale Bus Interchange closed when it did.

• Sengkang Grand Mall, at Buangkok MRT, adds a supermarket, a hawker centre and a community club on the southern edge.

Parks and sport

Sengkang Riverside Park is the town’s big green space: 21.3 hectares at Anchorvale Street and Sungei Punggol, with one of Singapore’s larger man-made wetlands, more than 20 kinds of fruit trees and a 290 m bridge over the water, according to NParks. Sengkang Sports Centre on Anchorvale Road has a swimming complex, gym and sports hall (our ActiveSG gym guide covers the gym), and the park connectors link the river to Punggol’s waterway.

The river itself is the town’s quiet asset. Paths follow Sungei Punggol for long stretches, so an evening run or a family ride can go from Anchorvale to the Punggol Reservoir without crossing many roads. On weekends the riverbanks fill with cyclists and dog walkers. Note that NParks does not allow fishing inside Sengkang Riverside Park.

Food

Sengkang’s hawker centres are all recent. NEA lists Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre (36 cooked food stalls), Fernvale Hawker Centre and Market on Sengkang West Avenue (28) and Buangkok Hawker Centre at Compassvale Bow (38). Coffee shops under the blocks and the mall food courts cover the rest. Residents looking for long-running stalls often go the other way, two stops south to Hougang or three to Kovan. Line-ups and hours change, so check before you go.

Schools and healthcare at a glance

• Healthcare: Sengkang General Hospital, with an Emergency Department, and Sengkang Community Hospital share a campus on Sengkang East Way. Sengkang is mainly HDB, built from the late 1990s onwards, with executive condominiums and private condos along the river and near the stations. Why a LinkTown resident would go

The hospital is the practical reason: Sengkang General Hospital is two stops from Hougang with no change of train, which matters for families with older parents and for healthcare workers who do shifts. The riverside park and wetland make an easy weekend walk, and The Seletar Mall is a change of scene from Hougang’s own malls. In the other direction, Sengkang households come to Hougang for the older hawker centres and, from around 2030, the Cross Island Line interchange at Hougang. Is the Sengkang LRT West Loop closed?

Partly, until 18 October 2026. LTA closed the West Loop’s inner direction, via Cheng Lim, from 19 April 2026 for depot and track works. The outer direction via Renjong keeps running, and shuttle buses run from Sengkang Bus Interchange at weekday peaks. Check LTA or SBS Transit for updates.
