The Seletar Mall: Shops, Food, Playground and Getting There from Hougang

The Seletar Mall is the everyday mall for Fernvale, the north-western corner of Sengkang. Despite its name, it is nowhere near Seletar Airport; it sits at 33 Sengkang West Avenue beside Fernvale LRT station (SW5), and it has always leaned towards young families. For someone considering LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences), it is a trip rather than a neighbourhood errand, but it has a few things worth knowing about, especially if you have children.

What happened to the cinema

Shaw Theatres closed its Seletar cineplex on 15 December 2024, about ten years after the mall opened, as reported by The Straits Times and CNA. The space on level 4 now holds entertainment tenants instead:

• Cow Play Cow Moo (#04-28), which bills itself as the largest arcade in Singapore.
• HaveFun Karaoke, a family karaoke chain.
• Sunshine Childhood Playland (#04-22/23), a paid indoor playground.

Claw-machine shops such as Fun Claw (#B1-26) and Hi Claw (#04-03) round out the arcade theme. For films, the nearest multiplex is now Shaw Theatres at Waterway Point in Punggol.

Supermarkets and daily needs

FairPrice Finest in basement 2 is the main grocery stop and the busiest part of the mall on weekday evenings. Scarlett Fresh on level 2 is a smaller second option. The basements also have bakery and snack counters such as Bengawan Solo (#B2-K4) and Boost Juice Bars (#B2-21), and there is an AXS station (#B1-K13/14) for bill payments.

Other listed shops include Bata, 2PM Apparel, a gym (247 Fitness, #02-38), Cellarbration and Box Hunt, alongside phone shops, pharmacies, opticians and enrichment centres such as Aureus Academy and Bluetree Education Centre. Food and restaurants

• Din Tai Fung at #02-07 to 10, the mall’s best-known restaurant.
• Haidilao hotpot, which the mall features in its dining highlights.
• 4Fingers Crispy Chicken (#03-22) and a spread of fast food, cafés and dessert counters across the lower floors.

This is where the mall stands out:

• Rooftop playground on level 4, free, open 10am to 10pm, weather permitting, with solar lighting after dark. It is hot at midday and much nicer late in the afternoon.
• Nursing and diaper-changing rooms in basement 1 and on levels 2, 3 and 4, with hot water dispensers.
• Kids Adventure Club, a free membership for children aged 4 to 12, with invitations to mall events and birthday treats.
• Enrichment centres for art, music and dance across the upper floors.

• Bus: the mall lists services 50, 163 and 163M at the Fernvale Stn/Blk 439A stop, and service 102 at the Blk 436A stop.
• Car: the car park entrance is on Fernvale Road. The mall publishes separate weekday (Monday to Thursday) and weekend (Friday to Sunday) rates, with weekends slightly higher.

Is it worth the trip from Hougang Central?

For groceries and a quick meal, probably not; Compass One at Sengkang station and Hougang’s own malls cover that. The Seletar Mall is worth the ride for its family features: the free rooftop playground, the playland and the arcade floor. It is also handy if you are heading on to Seletar Aerospace Park or Fernvale’s riverside paths.

Back at home, LinkTown Residences is planned above Hougang MRT and a new integrated bus interchange, with a mall of about 300,000 sq ft developed and owned by CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust and a town plaza with sheltered event space.
