Bak Kut Teh in the North-East: 6 Spots Near Hougang, Punggol and Sengkang

Bak kut teh is the North-East’s comfort breakfast and its rainy-night dinner. Pork ribs go into a long-simmered broth, and you eat them with rice, dough fritters and a small pot of strong Chinese tea. If you are getting to know the area around LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences), the good news is that you can find a bowl within one or two MRT stops in almost every direction.

This guide lists six places we could confirm are trading in 2026, from a mall chain beside Hougang MRT to a newly opened Klang-style stall in Sengkang. We checked each one in September 2026 against the business’s own pages, mall listings and reviews dated this year, and left out names we could not confirm.

Three styles you will see

• Teochew (peppery): a pale, clear soup with plenty of garlic and white pepper. This is the Singapore default.
• Hokkien (herbal): darker and sweeter, with soy sauce and Chinese herbs.
• Klang (Malaysian): a thick, dark herbal broth, often served bubbling in a claypot with mushrooms, tofu puffs and offal.

Hougang

1. Old Street Bak Kut Teh (Hougang Mall)

90 Hougang Avenue 10, #02-20/22, Hougang Mall. The closest sit-down bowl to Hougang MRT: go up to level 2 of the mall and you are there. Old Street is a chain that grew up in malls, so expect air-conditioning, quick service and a family-friendly menu. Its soup is the peppery kind, and it is also known for dry bak kut teh, ribs braised in a thick, savoury dark sauce instead of broth. 2. Yong Ji Klang Bak Kut Teh

Blk 682 Hougang Avenue 4. A coffee-shop stall in the older Hougang Village estate, cooking the dark, herbal Klang version. Regulars describe it as authentic and not too peppery, which makes sense: this style leans on herbs and soy rather than pepper. Order the mixed pork with rice and add braised tofu or mushrooms. Reviews from 2026 confirm it is still trading. From Hougang Central it is a short bus ride; the same trip takes you to many of the estate’s breakfast coffee shops.

3. Han Jia Bak Kut Teh Pork Leg

377 Hougang Street 32, #B1-20/21, Hougang RiverCourt. Han Jia traces its recipes to 1963 and its first stall at East Coast Lagoon Food Village; the Hougang RiverCourt shop is its second home. As the name suggests, it does two things: pork rib soup and braised pork leg, and many diners order both. It opens early at weekends, which suits a late breakfast. Hougang RiverCourt is closer to Buangkok MRT (NE15) than to Hougang Central, so either take a bus or ride one stop north and walk.

4. Ah Kong Bak Kut Teh (1997)

Kopitiam Square, 10 Sengkang Square, opposite Compass One. The newest name on this list: local food groups flagged it as a new opening at the coffee-shop complex and were reviewing it in August and September 2026. It serves Klang-style herbal soup as well as dry bak kut teh and braised sides. It is two MRT stops from Hougang, by Sengkang MRT (NE16), so it pairs well with an errand at Compass One. 5. Feng Xiang Bak Kut Teh

Fernvale Hawker Centre & Market, 21 Sengkang West Avenue, #03-01. A herbal bak kut teh stall that serves its soup in claypots, with smoky fried porridge as a well-known side. The Fernvale outlet closed for two weeks in July 2026 and reopened on 29 July, according to the stall’s own social posts. From Hougang, ride to Sengkang and change to the Sengkang LRT west loop for Fernvale.

6. Song Fa Bak Kut Teh

Song Fa is a heritage bak kut teh brand whose New Bridge Road shop holds a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand in 2026. Its soup is the peppery Teochew kind, served with braised sides and kung fu tea. Its outlets page lists three branches in the North-East:

How to order

• Ribs: most places offer standard ribs and a meatier premium cut.
• Sides: you tiao (dough fritters) to dip, braised peanuts, salted vegetables, tau pok and braised egg.
• Refills: asking for a soup top-up is normal at most shops.
• Dip: cut chilli in dark soy sauce for the ribs.

What this means from Hougang Central

From LinkTown Residences, planned directly above Hougang MRT (NE14) and a new bus interchange, the Hougang Mall bowl is a short walk and every other place in this guide is one bus ride or a few stops on the North East Line. The integrated development will also add a mall of about 300,000 sq ft with its own food outlets; tenants have not been announced.
