Hougang Market and Hawker Centres: The 3 NEA Centres, Coffee Shops and Cleaning Days

When people in Hougang say they are going to the market, they usually mean one of two places: Kovan 209 or the Hainanese Village Centre on Hougang Avenue 1. Both combine a wet market with a floor of cooked food stalls. A third NEA centre, Ci Yuan, is newer and closer to Hougang Central. Around all three are coffee shops that fill in the gaps, especially in the evening. Ci Yuan Hawker Centre

Ci Yuan opened in August 2015 and shares a building with Ci Yuan Community Club on Hougang Avenue 9. It has 40 cooked food stalls and no wet market. Because it is newer, it is brighter and better ventilated than the older markets, and it is easy to combine a meal with a class, a clinic visit or errands at the community club.

For future residents of Hougang Central, Ci Yuan is the nearest NEA centre: a short bus ride or a walk of a little over a kilometre from Hougang MRT.

Kovan Market & Food Centre (Kovan 209)

Built in 1983, Kovan 209 is the biggest of the three, with around 65 cooked food stalls wrapped around a large wet market. NEA describes it as minutes from Kovan MRT, and warns visitors to be prepared to queue at the popular stalls. Noodles, fish soup, economical rice, kueh and old-school drinks are the staples, and weekend breakfast is the busiest time.

Hainanese Village Centre (Hougang 105)

The centre at Blk 105 Hougang Avenue 1 underwent a major facelift in 2005. NEA calls it a very popular centre, especially at weekends, serving both the Lorong Ah Soo estate and workers from the Defu Lane industrial area across the road. That means it stays busy on weekday lunchtimes too. It has 51 cooked food stalls and about 120 market stalls.

Locals often call it the Lorong Ah Soo market. It is best reached by bus from Hougang Central or Kovan.

NEA cleaning closures

Every NEA hawker centre closes for a few days each quarter for cleaning, and sometimes for longer repair works. Most stalls, including the wet market, are shut on those days. As of 28 September 2026, NEA’s published schedule lists:

Coffee-shop clusters

NEA centres are only part of the picture. Much of Hougang eats at privately run coffee shops under HDB blocks, which set their own hours and are not covered by NEA’s cleaning schedule. The main clusters:

• Hougang Village (Hougang Avenues 4 and 8): a dense run of coffee shops around the older blocks, busy from breakfast.
• Hougang Central: coffee shops around the town centre blocks, handy for dinner near the MRT.
• Upper Serangoon Road near Kovan: shophouse eateries and coffee shops that stay open late, some into the small hours.
• Hougang Avenue 1 and Lorong Ah Soo: coffee shops around the Hainanese Village Centre, useful when the centre is closed.

Just outside Hougang

• Buangkok Hawker Centre, level 2 of Sengkang Grand Mall, 70 Compassvale Bow. Opened November 2023 with 38 cooked food stalls. NEA lists cleaning on 16 to 17 November 2026.
• Chomp Chomp Food Centre, 20 Kensington Park Road, Serangoon Gardens. 36 stalls, best known for evening barbecue and supper. Cleaning listed for 14 to 16 December 2026.
• Serangoon Garden Market, 49A Serangoon Garden Way. 46 cooked food stalls. Cleaning listed for 5 to 6 October 2026.

Tips for visiting

• Go early for the markets. Wet market stalls are busiest from early morning and many close by early afternoon.
• Return your tray. Tray and crockery return is expected at all NEA centres.
• Carry a little cash. Most stalls take e-payment, but some older ones still prefer cash.
• Reserved seats. A tissue packet on a table means the seat is taken.

What this means at Hougang Central

LinkTown Residences is planned directly above Hougang MRT (NE14) and a new bus interchange. From there, Ci Yuan is the closest NEA centre, Kovan 209 is one train stop away, and the Hainanese Village Centre is a bus ride south. The new mall in the Hougang Central integrated development is expected to add diverse food and beverage options, but none of the published plans mention a hawker centre, so the NEA centres and coffee shops will remain the everyday budget choice.
