Hougang’s food is spread across a handful of pockets, from Hougang Central to Kovan and Lorong Ah Soo. Where to eat, what each area does best and the long-running names worth knowing.
Hougang food is less about one famous street and more about a handful of pockets, each with its own rhythm. Breakfast is strongest in the older estates, the markets peak before lunch, and Upper Serangoon Road takes over after dark. Hougang Central
The town centre is where you eat when you want it to be easy. Hougang Mall, beside the MRT, reopened its lower floors in January 2026 after a phased revamp and now has food on almost every level: quick Japanese and fried chicken in the basement and on level 1, sit-down restaurants such as Soup Restaurant, Sushiro and Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine on level 2, and the Foodies’ Garden food court on level 4. Around the mall, coffee shops under the town-centre blocks cover dinner and late snacks. It is not the most characterful part of Hougang for food, but it is the most convenient, and that matters on a weeknight.
Hougang Village: breakfast and porridge
The older blocks around Hougang Avenues 4 and 8 and Hougang Street 61 are often called Hougang Village. This is coffee-shop country. Many open around dawn for kopi, kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs, with stalls selling fried bee hoon, kueh and noodles alongside.
Sin Heng Kee Porridge
685 Hougang Street 61. A long-running porridge stall known for smooth Cantonese-style congee cooked to order, with combinations such as century egg and pork, fish and cuttlefish. Queues are normal at peak meal times, so go slightly off-peak.
Giant lists a 24-hour Giant Express at 683 Hougang Avenue 8, right in this cluster, if you want to pick up groceries after breakfast.
Ci Yuan and Hougang Avenue 9
Ci Yuan Hawker Centre at 51 Hougang Avenue 9 is the closest NEA hawker centre to Hougang MRT, about 1.1 km away. It opened in 2015 inside Ci Yuan Community Club and has 40 cooked food stalls. Kovan: noodles by day, supper by night
Kovan is one stop south on the North East Line, and for many people it is the best food in Hougang in one place.
Kovan Market & Food Centre
Blk 209 Hougang Street 21. Around 65 cooked food stalls around a wet market, next to Kovan MRT. Noodles are its strength. Fa Ji Minced Meat Fishball Noodle (#01-05) is one of the long-running names, a family stall serving bak chor mee and fishball noodles; expect a queue at weekend breakfast.
Upper Serangoon Road
- Yong’s Teochew Kueh, 1022 Upper Serangoon Road: handmade Teochew kueh such as soon kueh, ku chai kueh and png kueh, mostly for takeaway. Go in the morning; popular items sell out.
- Sin Chie Toke Huan, 1018 Upper Serangoon Road: a Hainanese curry rice shop that opens in the evening and trades into the early hours (see our late-night food guide for more supper spots). You choose from home-style dishes served over rice with curry gravy.
Heartland Mall next to Kovan MRT fills the gaps with chains such as Toast Box, Ya Kun Kaya Toast, MOS Burger, Saizeriya and Sushi Express. The Kovan food guide goes into more detail.
Lorong Ah Soo and Hougang Avenue 1
The Hainanese Village Centre at Blk 105 Hougang Avenue 1 anchors the southern tip of Hougang. It has 51 cooked food stalls above a wet market, and NEA notes it is especially busy at weekends and with workers from Defu Lane on weekdays.
Lorong Ah Soo Lor Mee
Hainanese Village Centre. A long-standing lor mee stall known for thick, starchy gravy and generous toppings. It tends to open around midday and can sell out before its listed closing time.
For dessert afterwards, Lickers at 124 Hougang Avenue 1 is a late-night ice cream café; its website lists closing at 2am. See cafes in Hougang.
Hougang Rivercourt and Hougang Street 32
Hougang Rivercourt, the HDB neighbourhood centre that opened in 2022, adds a supermarket, fast food and small eateries for the blocks around Hougang Street 32. Nearby, at 377 Hougang Street 32, is Sweedy Cafesserie, a homegrown dessert shop.
Tips for eating in Hougang
- Start early. Many of Hougang’s best-known stalls open for breakfast and close by early afternoon.
- Check rest days. Small stalls often close one weekday, commonly Monday or Wednesday.
- Check NEA cleaning dates before travelling to a hawker centre for one stall.
- Carry some cash. Most stalls take e-payment, but not all.
