Lorong Chuan: MRT Station (CC14), Schools, Food and the Link from Hougang

Lorong Chuan is a road, a Circle Line station and a quiet corner of Serangoon, all with the same name. For most people it is the stop for Nanyang Junior College or the back door into Serangoon Gardens. For anyone weighing a home at LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences), it is also a useful example of how the North-East’s rail lines join up: Lorong Chuan is three stops from Hougang MRT with one change. This guide covers the station, the schools, food and housing around it.

Lorong Chuan MRT station (CC14)

The station is underground at 150 Serangoon Avenue 3, near the junction with Lorong Chuan. It opened in 2009 as part of the Circle Line’s stretch between Bartley and Marymount. Note that the station code is CC14; the neighbouring Serangoon interchange is CC13.

Getting there from Hougang Central

1. North East Line from Hougang (NE14) to Serangoon (NE12): 2 stops.
2. Change to the Circle Line (towards HarbourFront via Bishan) and ride 1 stop to Lorong Chuan (CC14).

Allow about 15–20 minutes including the transfer; this is approximate. The straight-line distance from Hougang MRT is about 3.8 km (OneMap). Our North East Line guide has more on the NEL, and NEX is worth a stop at the interchange.

By bus instead

There is also a one-seat option. Bus 136, which you can board on Upper Serangoon Road a few minutes’ walk from Hougang MRT, runs west through Serangoon Gardens and past the Chuan Terrace stop at the northern end of Lorong Chuan on its way to Ang Mo Kio. It takes longer than the train but avoids a transfer, and it is handy if you are heading to the Gardens first. Within the area, bus 73 links Lorong Chuan station, New Tech Park and Serangoon Garden Circus.

Drivers have direct access to the Central Expressway (CTE) from Lorong Chuan, which is one reason the area appeals to people who drive into town. From Hougang Central, the KPE and Upper Serangoon Road are the usual ways across.

Food and everyday needs

New Tech Park, the business park at 151 Lorong Chuan opposite the station, has a retail podium with cafés, restaurants and other everyday outlets. It is busiest on weekday lunchtimes, when office workers come down. Outlets change, so check what is open before you go.

Homes around Lorong Chuan

Unlike Serangoon Central or Serangoon North, Lorong Chuan is not an HDB town. Most homes around the station are private: landed estates of terrace and semi-detached houses on either side of the road, and condominiums of different ages. Who Lorong Chuan suits, and who it does not

• Suits: families with children at the nearby schools, people who value a quiet street and a Circle Line station, and drivers who use the CTE daily.
• Less suited: anyone who wants a mall, a hawker centre and a bus interchange within a few minutes’ walk. For those, you need NEX at Serangoon or a town centre such as Hougang Central.
• Visitors: most come for school, for work at New Tech Park, or as a way into Serangoon Gardens. Weekday school hours are the busiest time on the platforms.

The Cross Island Line will change the picture for both. Its Phase 1, targeted for around 2030, makes Hougang an interchange with new stations at Serangoon North and Tavistock on the way to Ang Mo Kio and Bright Hill.
