Bike Rental Singapore: Renting a Bike in Punggol and Hougang, and the Rules to Know

Searching for bike rental in Singapore usually means one of two things: grabbing a shared bike for an hour, or renting a proper bike, perhaps a child’s bike or a tandem, for a family outing. In the north-east, where the park connectors link Hougang, Sengkang, Punggol and Coney Island, both options are useful. This guide explains how each works, where to start from Hougang Central, where LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences) is planned, and the LTA rules every rider should know.

Option 1: shared bikes

Bike-sharing in Singapore is app-based and dockless, and operators need a licence from LTA. Anywheel is one of the operators, and its app works the way the others do:

1. Download the operator’s app and register a payment method.
2. Find a nearby bike on the in-app map.
3. Scan the QR code on the bike to unlock it, and ride.
4. End the trip in a designated parking area and scan the parking zone’s QR code.

That last step matters. LTA says shared bicycles must be parked only in designated parking zones shown in the app, and that users who fail to end trips properly may be banned. Parking zones are plentiful around MRT stations and HDB estates but thinner on the coast, so check the map before riding somewhere remote like Coney Island. If there is no zone at your destination, plan to ride back.

Shared bikes suit short, one-way trips: Hougang MRT to Punggol Park, or Punggol MRT to the waterway. They are less suited to small children, who need smaller frames, and to long days out, where hourly charges add up. Pricing and passes change often; check the app for current rates.

Option 2: rental counters

Counters rent bikes by the hour and usually offer children’s bikes, tricycles and sometimes tandems. In the north-east:

• Punggol Park (Hougang): NParks states that bike rentals are available in the park. It is the most convenient counter for Hougang Central, and the lake loop is flat, paved and good for a first ride. Our Punggol Park guide covers the walk from Hougang MRT.
• Around the Punggol coast: private rental operators have traded near Punggol Point and Punggol Settlement over the years. With Punggol Point Park closed for upgrading from 11 August 2026 to 31 December 2027, per NParks, check an operator’s current listing or call before you travel. Do not rely on older blog lists.

Counters set their own hours and prices and may ask for identification or a deposit. Weekend mornings are busiest, so arrive early if you need several bikes of particular sizes.

On Coney Island, NParks allows cycling on the 2.5 km connector and main paths but not the boardwalks, and the gravel suits a sturdy bike better than a road bike. Further west, the Seletar West Park Connector passes Hampstead Wetlands Park at Seletar Aerospace Park, though NParks does not allow cycling on its boardwalk. LTA rules to know

• Helmets on roads. LTA requires cyclists to wear a helmet on roads. Park connectors are not covered, but a helmet is sensible.
• Pedestrian-Only Paths. Since 1 July 2025, bicycles are banned from footpaths converted to Pedestrian-Only Paths, usually where a cycling path runs alongside. LTA says first-time offenders face penalties of up to S$2,000 and/or jail of up to three months.
• Speed. Watch your speed and slow down around people, at bus stops and at junctions, as LTA’s code of conduct asks. Speed limits apply on footpaths and shared paths; check LTA’s current figures.
• Lights. Switch on a white front light and a red rear light (or use a red rear reflector) when riding in the dark.
• Riding in groups on roads. LTA caps groups at five bicycles in single file, or ten riding two abreast, with at least 30 metres or two lamp posts between groups.
• Shared bikes. Park only in designated zones and scan the zone’s QR code to end your trip.

Bringing your own bike

If you own a bike, the park connectors mean you can ride straight from Hougang to Punggol without trains. Lock the frame, not just a wheel, and use proper bicycle racks near MRT stations and malls rather than railings or trees. Folding bikes are the easiest to combine with the train; check the public transport operators’ current rules on size and folding before you board.

For residents of LinkTown Residences, planned directly above Hougang MRT, a bike is a practical way to use the north-east: Punggol Park is minutes away, and from there the park connectors reach Sengkang, Punggol and the coast without main roads.
