What kind of hawker centre it is

Buangkok is one of NEA’s socially-conscious enterprise hawker centres (SEHCs). NEA builds the centre and sets the terms, and an operator manages it day to day: leasing stalls, cleaning, promotions and the mix of food. NEA describes the model as operators bringing food curation and operations know-how while hawkers focus on affordable meals. Fei Siong Social Enterprise, the operator here, also runs Ci Yuan Hawker Centre on Hougang Avenue 9.

In practice, SEHC centres like this one feel brighter and more modern than the older markets in Hougang and Kovan. Stall line-ups also change more often than at a decades-old market, as new hawkers try their luck and some move on, so treat any list you read online as a snapshot.

What to expect

With 38 stalls, the centre offers the broad mix you would expect of a modern heartland hawker centre: rice and noodle stalls, local breakfast items, a few international options, drinks and desserts. It is cooked food only; for fresh produce, the nearest NEA wet markets are at Kovan 209 and the Hainanese Village Centre in Hougang, or Fernvale in Sengkang. Getting there from Hougang Central

• MRT: Hougang (NE14) to Buangkok (NE15) is one stop north on the North East Line, roughly 2 to 3 minutes on the train (approximate). Sengkang Grand Mall is beside the station; go up to level 2.
• Bus: the development also contains a bus interchange. Use a journey planner for the best service from your block.
• Car: Sengkang Grand Mall has a car park; parking charges apply.
