Buangkok: A Resident’s Guide to the Neighbourhood One Stop from Hougang

Buangkok is the stretch of estates you pass between Hougang and Sengkang on the North East Line, and it is easy to underrate. It has its own MRT station with one of the best-known stories in Singapore’s transport history, a new integrated mall and bus interchange, a leafy park connector, and, hidden off Yio Chu Kang Road, the last kampong on the mainland. This guide is for anyone weighing up the neighbourhood, including buyers following LinkTown Residences (Hougang Central Residences), one stop away at Hougang MRT (NE14).

Character: the in-between neighbourhood

Buangkok is not a town of its own. The name, 万国 in Chinese, comes from Lorong Buangkok, an old road through what was once rubber and farm country, and today it covers estates on both sides of the Hougang–Sengkang boundary. Most of the housing went up from the late 1990s as the two towns expanded, which is why the blocks feel newer than central Hougang and why the area has a young-family profile. The main road spine is Buangkok Drive and Sengkang East Way, with Buangkok Green running along the park connector.

The station that waited

Buangkok MRT (NE15) was built with the rest of the North East Line, but when the line opened on 20 June 2003 trains ran straight through. SBS Transit said there were not yet enough homes within walking distance to justify opening it. Residents pushed back. In July 2005 grassroots leaders surveyed commuters to show that people would walk more than 400 m to a station, and on 28 August 2005, during a ministerial visit, eight cardboard white elephants appeared on the road to the station. Police investigated and issued a stern warning in October 2005. The station opened in January 2006, and “white elephant” has been part of local lore ever since.

Transport today

Buangkok station sits under Sengkang Central near Compassvale Bow, one stop from Hougang and one from Sengkang. Buangkok Bus Interchange opened on 1 December 2024 as part of Sengkang Grand Mall, which LTA described as Singapore’s 12th Integrated Transport Hub. It started with services 110, 114 and 156, with room for up to seven services. The old Compassvale Bus Interchange closed when it opened. Drivers are close to the KPE and TPE, and cyclists can ride the park connectors south to Punggol Park.

Mall and food

Sengkang Grand Mall, next to the station, handles daily needs: a supermarket, shops and services and a community club under the same roof as the bus interchange. Inside the same development is Buangkok Hawker Centre, which NEA lists with 38 cooked food stalls at Compassvale Bow. Green spaces

The Buangkok Park Connector runs about 1.5 km from the junction of Yio Chu Kang Road and Buangkok Green, along Buangkok Green, to Sengkang East Road, according to NParks. It is wheelchair accessible and joins the Serangoon Park Connector, which leads to Punggol Park. That makes it the easiest car-free route from Buangkok to the lake. Smaller neighbourhood parks and playgrounds sit between the blocks.

Kampong Lorong Buangkok

At the western end of the park connector, off Yio Chu Kang Road near Gerald Drive, is Kampong Lorong Buangkok, a cluster of zinc-roofed homes on privately owned land that dates back to 1956. About 25 families still live there, according to a CNA report in November 2024. It is a real village, not an attraction, so visits should be quiet and brief. Schools and healthcare at a glance

Housing mix

Most homes in Buangkok are HDB flats from the late 1990s and 2000s, with some newer blocks. Private options include Sengkang Grand Residences, the integrated condo above the mall and bus interchange, completed around 2023, and smaller condos such as Jewel @ Buangkok. For someone at Hougang Central, Buangkok is close enough to feel like part of home: one stop for a different hawker centre, a quick supermarket run at Sengkang Grand Mall, or a walk along the park connector towards the kampong. It is also the most direct comparison for buyers.
